Paris Climate Accord Agreement Withdrawal & Your MOC’s

Trump announced the withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, during  a speech in the Rose Garden today. Such a fitting location for denial of climate change and the environmental disasters that our innovations have had on the globe.

During his campaign, Trump vowed to "cancel" U.S. participation in the deal. World leaders and business figures had recently urged him to reconsider, but by Wednesday morning, reports began to surface that Trump had decided to leave the pact.

Barack Obama had used his authority as president to join the Paris accord without a vote in Congress. That means Trump can remove the U.S. from the accord without a vote. But it will take awhile: Under the terms of the agreement, he wouldn't actually be able to withdraw until November 2020. Source

That could take nearly four years to complete, meaning a final decision would be up to the American voters in the next presidential election. Source

The value of the Paris Agreement is in its aspirational goal of limiting temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius, not in its implementation mechanisms, which are voluntary, insufficient, and impossible to monitor. But that modest goal will be breached shortly, which makes the agreement a kind of fig leaf, offering political cover to those who would soft-pedal the runaway climate crisis a while longer. Opinion of  Ken Ward former deputy director of Green peace.  Source

District 10 - Val Demings

Demings Denounces Decision to Withdraw from Paris Climate Agreement

Congresswoman Demings made the following post on Facebook on June 1:

“By walking away from the Paris Climate Agreement, we are sending a strong message of indifference to our allies around the world.

Surrounded by coastlines, Florida knows the impact climate change and rising sea levels have on our homes, businesses and tourism.

Additionally, Florida ecosystems, such as the Everglades, the Ten Thousand Islands, and the Big Bend coastline are already exhibiting signs of sea-level stress.

We have a moral obligation to protect our natural resources for our children, their children and the generations to come. Our nation has to continue to be a global leader on Climate change.”

Senator Marco Rubio

Senator Rubio Critical of Paris Agreement Since the Beginning

Marco Rubio

Senator Rubio has made no public statement on the decision to withdraw the US from the Paris Climate Agreement, but the following statement made shortly after the enactment of the agreement says it all:

““I believe strongly in conserving natural resources and protecting our environment for our kids and grandkids. President Obama’s ridiculous Climate Agreement, however, is more about appeasing extreme activists and preserving his liberal legacy. It won’t change the weather, but it will hurt our economy and take away the jobs of hundreds of thousands of hardworking Americans, including many in Florida, who will also see their energy bills go up. But in addition to crushing the American Dream with excessive and overly burdensome regulations, this agreement will pave the way to American taxpayers sending billions of dollars to countries like India and China, with no way of ensuring they hold up their end of the bargain. Just like President Obama’s terrible deal with Iran is letting that country cheat its way to a nuclear weapon, this climate agreement is all for show and so full of loopholes it is practically meaningless.” Source

Senator Bill Nelson

Senator Nelson calls US Withdrawal a “Huge Mistake”

Bill Nelson

Friends – I can’t stop thinking about President Trump’s decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement and how it will affect our state.

Sea-level rise caused by climate change is a real threat to Florida. And if the U.S. isn’t going to do its part to fight climate change, then millions of Floridians living along the coast will be at risk.

Thousands of Floridians responded to our survey last week to tell us how they felt about the president’s decision. Now it’s time to tell him directly.

Click here to add your name to our petition: Tell President Trump we demand action on climate change!

- Bill

Senator Nelson made the following post on Facebook following the announcement that the US will withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement: “This is a huge mistake. Sea-level rise caused by the Earth heating up is a real threat to Florida. If the U.S. isn’t going to do its part to combat climate change, then the rest of the world won’t do theirs and millions of Floridians living along the coast will be at risk." Source
